Christmas Tiger Sweater

Meet Bengalina

She’s a standard 17 inch “teddy bear” animal from Animaland, a Build-a-Bear type company. I made her during a school event last year and thought it would be fun to design a few patterns for her. Here’s my first attempt:

Christmas Tiger Sweater

Front:

            Cast on 36 stitches

Work 2 rows knit 1, purl 1 ribbing

            Row 3: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 30, knit 2 together, knit 1 – 34 Stitches

            Row 4: Purl

Rows 5-10: Continue in stockinette stitch

            Row 11: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 28, knit 2 together, knit 1 – 32 stitches

            Row 12: Purl 1, purl 2 together, purl 26, purl 2 together, purl 1

Row 13: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2 together, knit 20, knit 2 together, knit 2 together, knit 1

            Row 14:  Purl 1, purl 2 together purl 18, purl 2 together, purl 1

            Row 15: knit 1, knit 3 together, knit 16, knit 3 together, knit 1

            Row 16: Purl 1, purl 2 together, purl 14, purl 2 together, purl 1

Rows 17 – 20: Work in straight stockinette stitch

            Row 21: Knit 3, cast off 12, knit 3

Row 22: Purl first 3 stitches, slip last 3 on a holder

Work 3 rows stockinette stitch with remaining 3 stitches

            Row 4: Purl 2 together, purl 1

            Row 5: Knit 2 together

Cut yarn and draw it through the remaining loop

Re-attach yarn to the other three stitches, starting on the wrong side

Work 4 rows stockinette stitch, starting with a purl row

            Row 5: Purl 1, purl 2 together

Row 6: Knit 2 together, cut thread and draw it through the remaining loop

(Note: Bengalina’s neck measures 12 inches, which is really too large for this pattern. It would work better on animals with a skinnier neck. For an animal of her dimensions, some of the decreases could be omitted on the right and left sides.)

Right Side:

            Cast on 22 stitches

Work 2 rows knit 1, purl 1 ribbing

Work 8 rows stockinette stitch, starting with a knit row

            Row 11: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 19

            Row 12: Purl 18, purl 2 together, purl 1

            Row 13: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2 together, knit 15

            Row 14: Purl 13, purl 2 together, purl 2 together, purl 1

            Row 15: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2 together, knit 8, knit 2 together, knit 1

            Row 16: Purl 8, purl 2 together, purl 2 together, purl 1

            Row 17: Knit 8, knit 2 together, knit 1

Rows 18-20: Work in stockinette stitch

            Row 21: Knit 3, cast off 7

Re attach yarn to remaining 3 stitches and work 3 rows stockinette stitch, starting with a purl row.

            Row 4: Knit 2 together, knit 1

            Row 5: Purl 2

            Row 6: Knit 2 together

Cut yarn and draw through remaining loop

Left side:

             Cast on 22 stitches

            Work 2 rows knit1, purl 1 ribbing

Work 8 rows stockinette stitch, starting with a knit row

            Row 11: Knit 19, knit 2 together, knit 1

            Row 12: Purl 1, purl 2 together, purl 18

With remaining 3 stitches, work 3 rows stockinette stitch, starting with a purl row

            Row 4: Knit 1, knit 2 together

            Row 5: Purl 2

            Row 6: Knit 2 together

Cut a tail and thread it through the remaining loop

Sleeves (make 2 alike)

            Cast on 30 stitches

            Work 2 rows stockinette stitch

            Row 3: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 24, knit 2 together, knit 1

Rows 4-12: Work in straight stockinette stitch

Row 13: Cast off 7, knit 14, cast off 7

Re attach yarn to remaining 14 stitches

            Purl first row

Second row: knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 8, knit 2 together, knit 1

Third row: Purl 2 together across

            Fourth row: cast off

Finishing: Sew side seams 2 and ¼ inches from the bottom. Sew on sleeves so the last few rows line up with the narrowest part of the shoulder. Crochet around the neckline, leaving extra yarn for a tie in the back if necessary. Sew on 2-4 snaps for closure. Using a 2 and ½ inch tree cookie cutter (or other desired shape) trace and cut a felt appliqué. Decorate with glitter glue and sew onto the front of the sweater.

(P.S. My grandma made the skirt! It’s crocheted, so I don’t have the pattern or know how she did it.)
